I need to find out how to breed rats. I am posting in the reptlie section cause everytime I ask in the rodent section they call me a murder for wanting to feed my snakes or they tell me to just buy them rather then tell me how to breed them. Our pet store that I use to buy my rats from closed down due to lack of business and the closest store is more then 2 hours away. Other then being a big waste of time and a lot of money on gas and during the winter it is almost impossible so it's not worth driving up there unless I have to. I need to learn how to breed rats other wise I will have to get rid of a few of my snakes and I really don't want to do that. Can someone please tell me how to breed rats.

ReptilesRULE9999: I don't feed my snakes life food so learn to think before you talk. Whats the difference if I breed them to kill them and you buy them from somebody else who killed them for you? I am a murderer and your an acomplise to murder whats the difference? And like I stated... the pet shop that was near me closed down!

You obviously need a boy and a girl if you are only breeding them for food it is a relatively easy proses. You need to have at least three cages preferably four. Rats can breed when they are around six months of age. Females called does are in season every five to six days often they will arch their back or raise their hind end in the are a bit when being petted. Put the Male called a buck in with her leave them together for two or three days. Gestation lasts about 24 days. The babies are born naked and defenseless. Right after birth give the mom warm milk with sugar or honey this will boost her energy. Make sure she has plenty of food and also give her canned cat food, eggs, and yogurt they give her the extra protein she needs. Mom takes care of the rest. At 4 wks male babies should be removed or they will breed mom and their sisters. Femal babies should be removed at about 6wks

It is as simple as putting a male with the female for a few days. She gets pregnant, you seperate the litter into males and females, and feed when they are big enough.

You are going to need a lot of space and several cages. It is very easy. They breed like rabbits.

Just buy a bunch of frozen rats. That way you don't have to breed them and you only have to take that long trip every once in a while.
