I'm doing a report on Historically Black Colleges and Universities and Historically Black Sororities and Fraternities.

Based on what you know (Not a rumor) about the two subjects, do you think they deserve to remain standing, do they need to be taken away, or do you have no opinion on them?

Although I am a product of both, I am not going to give my opinion of either.

Please, no racist comments, and please give references if you can!

OK, I'm seeing that a lot of people don't realize that HBCUs and HBSFs admit people of all races, not just Black. So knowing this as a FACT, what is your opinion?

Sufi: You make a good point on that. Most HBCU students are legacies now.

Well, they're colleges that get their identity from certain skin color, so they are, in a sense, racist institutions. Sigh, bring on the thumbs down.

I taught at an HBCU for 2 years. Many of my students were in HBSFs. Because of history you can't just eliminate these things. You can't just decide one day to close down a university. I think that in the modern day they must compete with other universities, or collaborate with other universities. I think that HBSFs will not be able to get by with not admitting white students, this will not be legal. There's nothing like 'deserve' or that they should be kept because they deserve it. Things change all the time and they should only be kept if they serve the community, the world, their students. They need to change to become more modern, just like everything else. Though there are many historical and current injustices and most go against black people in this country, it is no longer feasible to maintain segregation. Black students are now courted by the best universities. How will hbcus continue to recruit against the best universities in the country for the best black students. It's hard. Time to get strong and make the programs strong and get the right funding and eliminate programs that aren't working to SURVIVE!

During the time when segregation was prevalent, all-black colleges were practically a necessity. Now that educational segregation has been eliminated, the all-black colleges should be obsolete. I am wholeheartedly against any form of discrimination or segregation based on ethnicity or skin color. Schools for all-black, all-white, or anyone else are a throwback to the past and should be restructured.
