Ford Edge and Escape have high safety ratings and are very nice. Jeep liberty was recently redesigned so I can't say much about it. Chevy Equinox, is a great, roomy, comfortable, people and stuff mover. Not bad on gas either. Since I own one, I'm biased, therefore I suggest buying one or a Ford.

Jeeps have high roll over ratings so I wouldn't buy one...(I had a roll over accident in a Nissian Xeterra that was none too pretty and before I bought another car I did my research before buying another). I test drove a Saturne VUE and those seem nice.

also check out the lincoln zepher. you might be able to get a '07 in that price range. they're rad.
