If we did not have law, it would be a country of warlords, survival of the fittest, and we would have never got to the point of society that we are now.
We would still be living like a third world country, not knowing when we would be killed or robbed.

provides a structure and boundary to what is wrong and right, it is a way to judge individual claims against each other, based on common law principles of fairness and justice.
It can help the individual against the state/authority.
It is free from money/plotical influence in the best democracies.

Disadvantages:
It favours the rich and the landowners against the outsider.
It is conservative, male and white cuture that it protects.
It can be applied withour mercy and arbitary justice. e.g. Guantanamo is apparently a legal base for political prisoners kept but never convicted of a crime.

same rules apply to everyone.
elected representatives of the people make the law
it's written
you can defend yourself in court
right to face your charges and accuser
habeus corpus
chance to appeal

disadvantages
can be unevenly applied
isn't as fair as it appears to be
inflexible rules sometimes aren't the best
you are judged by people who don't know you or love you
justice system is expensive and favors those who can pay
judges are only human
