It is when the Moon passes through the shadow cast by Earth. There is not an eclipse every month because the Moon's orbit is tilted a few degrees to the Earth's orbit so that the Moon usually passes just above of below the Earth's shadow.

The earth's orbit around the sun and the moon's orbit around the earth are not coplanar.
