there are a lot of things they are lacking but if I were to be pinned down to one I would say responsible leadership. Here in the Detroit area a director is being paid some $300,000 a year but the kids can not afford books and schools are being closed for lack of money. Schools need someone creative to lead them by using what is available now to make schools better. No money for the school? Sell advertising on walls or fences around baseball or football arenas to raise money and make those sport self sufficient. Use the internet as a teaching school and stop prending that a teacher is always necessary to learn. It takes a year to learn a foreign language in a public school and yet there are programs where that can be learned in weeks - 12 weeks in one program I have to be able to read and write Japanese. The best way to help public schools is a voucher system - which would destroy any teachers union which supports all teachers good or bad - because in the face of a boycot of classes or a school by withholding vouchers a school system would be forced to purge itself of the bad teachers - one reason teacher's unions are against a voucher system - and end up with a higher educational experience.

Our public schools are lacking so much that it is easier to ask what they ARE NOT lacking.

Caring. It always gets blamed on the budget, the teachers, the Principal or Superintendent, but the bottom line here is too many people just don't care. My opinion :)

I think they are too academic and less personal. In other words everything they do is by what they learned from books it seems to me that they cant have any personal relation with the children. When i was little it wasn't like that, we had relations with our teachers it was almost like they were substituting our mothers. i think it was better!
