2. data for astronomers
3. big bucks for aerospace companies

Cons: 1. Large expense
2. data collected meaningless to everyone except
astronomers
3. We already know there is no other place in the
solar system where we can live, we really dont

There really aren't any "cons." There are two issues that have to be thougt out. One is how much to invest and how quickly--because at this point space exploration remains expensive. The second is how to evaluate and minimize risk, because, again at this stage, it is also dangerous.

Those are not "cons" except in the general sense. ALL new technology is expensive do develop, takes a long time, and is usually dangerous. One of every two European vessels in the 1400s that sailed out into the Atlantic did not return. Half the Pilgrims died the first year in America.

So what are the pros? First--technology and knowledge. This kind of research is basic as well as applied science. It is what is REQUIRED in order to lay the foundation for further technological progress and economic growth. We have already derived benefits from space travel that have paid for the program many times over, improving computers, medical care, aircraft, etc. Weather and communications satellites are the critical element in over $100 billion annually in economic activity in the US--none of which would exist without them. If wewant to continue to see economic and technological improvements tha tmake our lives better--we have to invest in basic science--and space travel has proven to be one of the highest-payoff ways to do that.

Here's another point: too many people talk about the risk as if that somehow precluded any other arguement. Well, here s the reality: the "safe" technologies we enjoy are safe only for one reason--people with the guts to take risks died learning how to make them safe.

For example: you hear people talking about a "right" to be sure tht commercial aircraft are safe. That is NOT a right--it is a gift--frelly left to us by the hundreds and thousand s of test pilots and pioneers tha tdied to make modern aircraft safe.

If we want better lives for ourselves and our children--that means learning new things. And that comes at a hig price: money and blood. We can choose to quit--to accept what has been left to us by braver souls who built the things we have--or we can continue to move forward.

I do not really see any cons to space exploration, the pros are definitely there though. We can learn and experience a lot through space exploration, provided that we fund the right researchers, and not waste money on NASA who has not accomplished much since the moon landing.

Pros: We learn more about why we are here, if there are otehrs out there, what else could be out there, Why is it out there, what exactly is Space

Cons: Time. With such long distances and the lifespan of humans, would it be worth it unless we develop technology to qucikly travel from one place to another? but then again, the universe is so big there is always going to be something further out there. Money, resources....

The pros are that it is our future and some day it will be as necessary for us as agriculture is now. And another pro is, in the words of Al Gore, "It is awesomely cool".

Cons are that it is expensive and dangerous, at least now it is.
