In English most domestic animals's names come from the Anglo-Saxon root - sheep, pig, cattle, cow. Whereas the name of the meat comes from the Norman language - Beef, mutton, veal, pork.

This is due to the social order that prevailed in England during the early Middle Ages. The workers who did the dirty work of tending to the livestock were Anglo-Saxons while the wealthy upper classes who could afford to eat meat were Normans.
This social order is at the core of the storyline of the Robin Hood legends.
