I've had to do that at several stores. Annoying but understandable since most theft is done by the employees. Also I do believe it is legal as long as they are patting you down or something along that line. If you don't like it then look for a different job (that's what I did after one job that actually made everyone take their shoes off before they left so they could make sure you didn't hide anything in them! Now THAT was crossing the line!)

I'm sure that it is but it does seem insulting. I'm glad that I didn't have to go through this when I worked in retail. I have nothing to hide but this would make me feel like I did. It seems that it should only be done to people that they are suspicious about but maybe that would be viewed as discriminatory? Is the guard nice about it? Does he or she view everyone suspiciously? If it's the latter then if I could, I would find another job. Why should you work for someone that doesn't even trust you? It sounds like they don't know their employees. What is happening in the world today?

If they have "probable cause" to believe you've stolen something then the store management, through the security guards, can use necessary force to detain you.
Other than that, no, they cannot legally compel a search. What they CAN do, though, is ask you to consent to a search, and if you say no they can fire you - and that would be 'for cause', which means no unemployment.

Check your contract.
And if you've got nothing to worry about, why worry?
The only thing I would suggest is that if you're female, and the guard is male, you should ask for a female to check you.

Maybe its in your contract that they reserve the rite to search you at all times, but other wise no its not leagal they must have the correct leagal doucuments.

It's not legal for them to force you. But it's legal for them to fire you if you don't go along. So your choice is pretty simple.
