I think I started noticing more cramping in general at about 30-32 weeks. It turned out to be nothing. I asked to be checked at my 33 week appointment, and everything was fine. I had my first routine check at 36 weeks. I was thinned out, but not dilated. Even if you are starting to thin out or dilate, it can still be weeks before anything really starts to happen. As long as you are not having regular pains that get more intense and frequent, I would not worry. It is unfortunately normal to start feeling crampy (and crappy!) as your body prepares for labor.

Of course, mention the discomfort and pains to your midwife and they will best be able to determine if you should be checked. Good luck!

I asked to not be checked unless absolutely necessary. Unless you are having signs of preterm labor or other complications, then there is no reason to check for dilation as it really does not tell you anything, just makes the mother anxious, and increases risk of the introduction of infection. I don't think I actually got checked until I was overdue, at 41 weeks.

If you are concerned that you may be having signs of preterm labor, then it won't hurt to have them check you.

They never checked me until I was in labor. I have had four and I was never checked in advance.
