We usually do it the weekend after thanksgiving, but since I was working so much through the holiday we put it up Mon night. I like to get through one holiday before celebrating the next one. Now everything is so rushed the stores have Thanksgiving going before Halloween and then right after Halloween they start with the Christmas stuff.

I put ours up the day after Thanksgiving this year. We have an artificial tree though and don't have to worry about it drying out. When I used to use a real tree I always waited until about 2 weeks before Christmas, which would be this weekend. I would take it down right after if the needles started to fall off too much.

The christmas tree is actually from an ancient pagan tradition celebrating the winter solstice. The idea was to bring a tree or log inside to dry out (usually for 12 days) so it could be burned on the night of the winter solstice. This is where the tradition of the yule log comes from also.
The pagans would also often decorate the tree or log, hence why we decorate christmas trees.
So to answer your question traditionally you put your christmas tree up 12 days before christmas.

Sometime before the 5th of December and we take it down the 1st week of the new year. Usually a day right after the kids go back to school. Use to always be on New Years Day but figure it's the last day of the school vacation why work.
We love the holiday season and make it last as long as we can.

We celebrate two holidays in our home so the tree goes up the day after Thanksgiving but is not decorated or lit until December 20-22.

Traditionally Christmas trees and decorations are put up on the 8th of December as this is supposedly the date of the Immaculate Conception and thus the start of the Christmas period.
