If you take a lot of pictures of detailed things from a distance, you'll want a bigger optical zoom. However, if you just take snapshots from relatively close up or take panoramic shots of distant objects where you aren't concerned about fine detail, you don't need more optical zoom. Another consideration if you're looking at digital cameras is the number of megapixels available. Basically more megapixels means higher resolution, so you get more fine detail on all of your pictures.

First let's talk about OPTICAL versus DIGITAL zoom.

Optical zoom is real zoom. Your lens extends to zoom in on an image.

Digital zoom is software based enhancement. Digital zoom isn't your lens physically moving out/extending it's just software that zooms in. Kinda like when you zoom in photoshop.

The more you zoom with DIGITAL the more distored the image looks. So OPTICAL zoom is the key as the more you zoom the closer you get without distortion.

Now 3x vs 5x is not a huge difference. So choose the camera you like best.

If Zooming is important you want to at least have 10x Optical zoom to be happy.

3X zoom just let u to find more resolution on your pic,and it will improve the power of your zooming.i mean that u can zoom more when u have a pic with 5X zoom, than 3X zoom.
