I think the high divorce rate is primarily contributed to immature behaviors and attitudes of many Americans. Since the military develops self-discipline and respect, which are two qualities that are seriously deficient in America, I think the divorce rate will go much lower because many more Americans will respect and love their significant other much more and will develop more self-discipline, which would help prevent them from cheating or doing anything else stupid.

Also, after being in boot camp for a long time and being deprived of female companions, I developed a more heartful respectful for women. I don't know why, I guess when as a guy you go through such a painful experience for so long without women it makes you appreciate them more. Kind of like how you appreciate food more after you go on a hunger strike.

I could be very wrong, and most people (including me) would think that this is a crazy idea. But I'm just curious to know what you guys would think about this

No, compulsory military service would not help marriages. Military service seems to destroy relationships through separation and the experiences the service person has can cause post traumatic stress disorder. If there were other compulsory services where people could develop self-discipline, learn respect, etc, then I think that is something that all people would benefit by as a part of growing up. But, what we have kills people, maims them and causes major psychological problems. So, no, I think it doesn't help and in fact adds to the problem.

While you make good points about that you respect something more and have a more disciplined focus on it as it becomes less available IE longing makes the heart stronger (and the military, indeed, has a large positive influence on maturity in many cases)...there is a HUGE loophole in that argument.

And that loophole is, while you might be dedicated enough NOT to cheat on whoever stays at home while you are in the military, many people may not (and many wives may, for example, cheat while their husbands are in the service). This is because people on both sides are likely used to be able to have someone to express their sexual feelings to on a regular basis and become "empty" if it doesn't happen (IE most mature cases of cheating involve one person becoming lonely while the other is on a business trip).

You may respect women more...but, if you learned your wife was cheating while you were gone, would you still want to stay together? That's my point...

Doubt it, unless the person to be married, marries after they earn Sgt. because a lot of people that I know who got married after boot camp ended up with a divorce before they made E5. The only personnel in the military that have a lower divorce rate are the officers ~_~, but they for the most part have matured a little more because they've had about 4 years to just do random things in college.

It's an interesting theory, and you could very well be correct, but I have a problem with compulsory military service for any reason. And I'm guessing that the ones who would benefit the most (spoiled, self-indulgant rich kids) are the same ones who would worm out of it some way.

Great. Lower divorce rates in trade for risking my life to kill someone I don't know and have no problem with. Sign me up *rolls eyes sarcastically*
