Hey guys, i recently ran into this thing on a website it's a lighting system for the fish tank that works with a few led lights that imitates the moonlight at night... it brings a little computer system that connects to the lights and turns on and off from dusk to dawn and imitates the moon cycle. I saw a couple pictures of it on the site and it looked really good and very nice, i'm just wondering if this kind of light actually has any benefits to the fish. They say there that this light helps with the fish's biological clock or something, just want to know if there's any truth to that. Thank you.

p.s. Here's the website, if u're interested in looking at it.

It has only recently been discovered that lunar light is just as important as daylight to fish and coral. not only that, but it is beautiful to see in your tank at night and gives you the opportunity to view all the nocturnal creatures going to town in your aquarium!

Puredoll is correct about importance - this is for coral reproduction mostly from what I've read. But like John, I also have to wonder about the manufacturer's claims.

If you know anything about astronomy, moonlight isn't constant - the moon goes through phases, so there are some nights where it's absent, others where it's rather bright (when the moon is full) and the rest of the cycle it's in between. And moonlight doesn't "stay on" all night, nor does it stay in the same position in the sky. While the lights might simulate the color effect of moonlight, they don't replicate the moon's cycles, which may be just as important.

Hi Lexux Nut, This is something I have been pondering on for quite a while & although they're primarily marketed for reef systems as I am soon to upgrade to a 100 gallon long for my Goldfish I'm thinking about using something like this at night together with linking their main tank lights to dimmer controls to replicate sunrise & sunset rather than them just going on & off.

I don't see any negative points although I wonder if the claim about actually being beneficial is true? That said, I'm always looking for ways to improve the lives of my fish & this would do exactly that I'm sure provide them with additional interest & look very nice at the same time. In fact there are computer controlled lighting units which not only replicate moonlight but will do complete seasonal changes including sunny days & cloudy ones-all completely pre-programmable but these are in the order of £600/$1,200 so perhaps not just yet!!

I would say go for it-by the way, I hadn't seen this particular one & have bookmarked it as an option for myself so thanks for the link!!

Looks really good, but take consideration of plants if you use them.
