Most Bible scholars believe that the wise men showed up well after Jesus was born--up to two years afterward. Although the story of Jesus' birth says that he was born in a stable, the wise men are said to have come to a house--so the family had time to find better lodging.

Also, when King Herod sent his soldiers out to kill children, hoping to kill Jesus (whom the wise men described as the new king), his instructions were to kill every boy under 2 years old.

And, if you believe the story about following a star, the star would probably have appeared at the same time Jesus was born, so you'd have to allow some travel time.

Jesus was 12 days old as January 6th is the Feast of the Epiphany which is the day that the Wise Men came to the Manger. This is why January 6 is celebrated as Three Kings Day in some Spanish speaking countries. That is also the 12 day of Christmas.
