I was told yesterday I need tie rod ends to pass my state inspection and was quoted $370, including labor. I was also told I need rear brake pads, quoted $330 with labor. Are these fair estimates, or should I shop around? I only have 15 days to clear my inspection now.

That is pretty high for those jobs. Call up you local auto parts store and find out what the prices of the parts are. Then think it should be around 100-120 for the tie rods and under a 100 for labor on the pads. Your pads should only be around $35. for the full set and the tie-rods should around $19. a piece.

Shop around. This is way high. And don't tell other shops you went some where before. It's always possible, but I find it hard to believe an '05 needs tie rod ends.
