I am 28 weeks pregnant and I will be going in for a 3D/4D ultraouns in a few weeks. These type of ultrasounds are elective only and they cost a good amount of money. I am really excited but I have a few questions for anyone that might have had one: Is it worth the cost? Could you really see more than on a regular ultrasound? Does drinking plenty of water prior to going in really help for a clearer image? Thanx to everyone.

At my 20 week ultrasound, the doctor had to help the tech find the heart because of the way my baby was facing. At the last moment he turned it to a 4D picture and we got some pictures of my baby looking like he was smiling. He didn't charge me. We can't see any noticeable features on our son, he looks like a normal, healthy boy. I know some people who get the 4D pics and the baby actually looks like them. My hubby and I decided we weren't going to pay extra money for this feature but we're glad we got it. I still don't think I would pay for it. The baby is squished up in there with a bunch of fluid so that distorts the image a bit and his face looked a bit skeletal which the doctor said was normal. May I ask, how much is it? If this is your first and it's under $200, I would so go for it. If this is your second and it would financially strain you, pass on it. Good luck! By the way, the lab I went to didn't have me drink any water and had me actually use the restroom before the ultrasound because they told me that a full bladder didn't make much difference and just made us women uncomfortable. But with my 1st, I had to drink a lot of water, so do what they tell you.

I was 28 weeks when I got mine...I was a bit disappointed. Although yes you can see more, that was it. With mine it seemed like she was on 2d more than she was 3d/4d because she had to locate certain things then convert to 3d/4d to see it. I do know for a fact that my baby is a girl (main reason for visit) and that she has my nose and my husbands lips... I do not feel that it was worth the $150 spent out of pocket. We got several images which looked all the same pritty much and a DVD of the entire ultrasound. My mom is the one that wanted the 3d/4d...I just wanted a sex determination, good thing she forked out the extra $50 because I never would have....I didn't want it to begin with. Oh and drinking water...I did because that is what you are generally supposed to do but the US tech MADE me use the bathroom because they can see better when your bladder isn't full and in the way. At 28 weeks, the baby is getting bigger and taking up more space so they need the room to look! Just my experience. I hope yours is much better and you are very pleased!!!!

well i had my ultrasound done at 19 weeks.. but i didnt have to pay for it. My doctor requested it and i told her i wanted to know the sex.. but they didnt tell me till a few weeks later, That it was a girl so yes. i want to go get one done now,im 36 weeks on friday :D. And yes i didnt get a 3D/4D ultrasound but i've seen them and yes there a lot more clear than the 2D and if you're wanting to know the sex of the baby its probably a lot more clear than the 2D. although i heard the 3D/4D waves arn't good for the baby. and yes i had to drink 3 tall glasses of water an hour and a half before the ultrasound and its suppose to help give a better image.. but it was reallly hard so i had to pee a little out.. i drank to much water lol.

I had a 3d/4d done at 19.5 weeks in my last pregnancy but didn't have to pay for it as it was done at a fetal medicine clinic and my insurance covered it. It's very neat to see though and yes you can see So much more than on a regular u/s. I didn't have a full bladder and still got clear images.

Here's some of the pics from mine:

I loved my 3d u/s, we paid 175 for it, had to drive 2 hours to get it done too! I wouldnt take back doing it one bit. it was worth every penny to me! You see more detail. WAY more detail (granted that also depends on how good the tech is)
Ive never heard of the water making a clearer image. they just said that having a SMALL bit of caffine would make the baby more active so its not just sitting there like a bump on a log! but too much will make it TOO active!

i went at 20 weeks because the hospital sonographer couldnt determine the sex of my baby, the scan was 4d and 3d, the 4d was very good, but i feel its much better just waiting to meet youtre baby at birth. i was a little dissapointed but its good to see baby in that way.

it is totally worth the money.....i paid 150 for it and also had to drive 2 hours and i was only 25 weeks...you can see there features so much better like you can actually tell what kind of nose she has...or whose(mom or dads)....its just like seeing a pic of a baby outside of the womb only a little more alien looking...lol...and they told me it is easier to see the babys sex and to make sure everything is in its proper place when your bladder is kinda full...dont fill it to much or it will be in the way.(thats what happened to me:)..well hope everything goes ok and congratulations

I just want you to know that it isn't always as effective as you think it will be,... we've had four already (all covered by insurance because of her heart) and they tried to give us a picture of her face, but couldn't because the baby was moving, sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't.

It's totally worth it. You'll see everything in color it just really zooms in on the babies features..

Enjoy!
