Part of the church budget is the priest's salary, so that he will have money to live on. They don't preach for free, unless you are part of a church that has a volunteer ministry like the LDS church.

I am sure at one time priests were underpaid and survived totally on what the church provided them. But, I sat in on a salary discussion for the pastor at my church. I was amazed on what all his salary package included...his wages, a free home to live in, insurance, a 401K, and a provision to send both of his children to college.God does provide.

Just like pastors, preach, counsel, run the church, if it is a small parish they will do the books for the church with an advisory board, if it is a large parish they will oversee all the committees, etc then diocese pays them a salary. Like pastors, they typically get free housing at the parsonage. (Catholics call the parsonage a "rectory".)

Brainwash the populace into believing what the priests tell them, in order to extort money from them.
