He was in the National Guard, back in the day when you had to know someone to get in. It was where the privileged went to avoid becoming cannon fodder in Viet Nam. He was officially released from the National Guard so he could work on his Daddy's campaign. He was released early BTW.

Even if you are in the National Guard and never served in the active Army or other branch, you still are discharged from the Guard. He was honorably discharged. In spite of all the bashing that has gone on about his military career, he served his time without blemish that would have prevented an honorable discharge. The only wrinkle is that he was an officer, and at one time they used to say that officers are never really "discharged" as Enlisted men are. But I'm not an expert in that area.

Bush was in the Texas Air National Guard, where he served on full-time active duty for a year before switching to normal part time Guard duty. He was originally a fighter pilot, flying the F-102. After flying about 350 hours Bush applied for a program called "Palace Alert" which allowed Guard pilots to be transferred to Air Force Squadrons and deployed overseas to Europe or to Vietnam, but at the time the AF was overstocked with pilots, and were only accepting Guard pilots that had over 500 hours.

(His unit, btw included the son of Democratic Senator and VP Candidate Lloyd Bentsen, and the son of Democratic Governor Connolly.)

He later moved to Alabama to work on a Republican Senate campaign, and transferred to the AL ANG. While there he lost his pilots medical and could no longer fly fighters. Attendance records from the Alabama unit are 'spotty' at best - on some days when the entire squadron was known to have flown a drill, their records don't show that ANY pilots reported for duty !

Bush may, or may not, have met his training requirements in Alabama. Based on the AL ANG's records alone, he didn't - but nor did ANY other officer in the unit, because the records are so bad.

In any event, his obligation was for 6 years, and after about 5 1/2 he requested an "early out" since he was going to Harvard Business School. The Guard had no shortage of non-flying pilots, so they let him go with an honorable discharge.

A couple of years ago Dan Rather of CBS showed some documents from a dead Alabama Guard officer that he claimed said that Bush hadn't shown up when he was supposed to - but they were quickly shown to be forgeries (They were done on a word processor, but there were no word processors back then) This hoax cost Dan Rather his job.

People are discharged from the military when their service obligation is up or the military decides to discharge them.

Yes he was discharged with an Honorable Discharge. His time was up. I used to have his military records on my computer because so many people were lying and saying he went AWOL when he didn't.

Yes, the war in Vietnam was over, and all the forces, Active Reserve and NG were being downsized. Also, the plane he flew was being retired. Guys were getting out by the thousands. He had earned enough points, asked for a discharge and got it.

Bush was in the National Guard, but no one there remembers him. He claims he was a member of a senator's staff WHILE in the National Guard. I've never heard of anyone being able to do that.
