People buy BMWs and Mercedes for the only purpose of "showing off". What about buying a huge house? for 2 people to live in,,,,
Do they look down to people that have a smaller house?
Does anyone see this as further abusing someone that believes them self to be worthless.
Does believing you are worthless contribute to being worthless?
is this a cycle perpetuated by the pride of the upper class?
so again are we secretly laughing at poorer people when we have more?

I am not sure about anybody else, however I make a good living, live in a modest house, as for a car, living in the city I do not need one, and therefore do not have one.
I find it unfortunate when people need to define themselves by what they can afford, or rather what they can get financing for. Do you really think that most people actually own their fancy house, or car? Many of the so called upper class are still living pay check to pay check, just staying one mortgage payment ahead of foreclosure.
So really am I jealous, not really. I can comfortably afford my lifestyle, all the while socking away money for a rainy day.

Actually, BMWs are pretty well made cars and can run for decades if you take care of them. Mercedes, on the other hand, is having trouble digging out from their cheapening when they were strangled by Chrysler, but they'll get back up there.
You have to look at it in terms of a wide picture. To some people you're a have. To others you're a have not. Even if you're living in say a efficiency apartment and just making ends meet, to someone you're a have because you have a roof over your head and a job. To someone else you're living on the edge of poverty.
Guilt over what you have isn't going to solve the problem. Short of giving away everything you have and working a la Mother Theresa among the poor, who STILL had access to sanitation and therefore had more than others, you'll just keep kicking yourself.

Greed has infiltraed the poor. There is a large segment of the poor that spend well beyond there means, becasue they feel having stuff equates to happiness. I was horrified to see how much money some of my less fortunate friends spend. I think the main culprit is the media. Little kids get barraged with rap songs which basically list luxery cars. I keep hearing songs that states the best way to get revenge on the haters is to wear alot of bling bling.
Edit: AS for houses, the world wide financial crisis is caused by Americans buying house beyond there means. When the Mortgage bubble burst, everyone will suffer.

Yup..It skewed the marketplace with the help of this injection of tax payer money. Threw out the predicted sales for something of the 12 months, watch automobile sales truly hit backside now. sellers are finding the money from Unca 0 are truly sluggish. maximum have a backlog of as much as 3 hundred sales and are nevertheless waiting on the 1st payback. that's inflicting substantial problems with money bypass, payroll, and so on. The 'organic progression' of the automobile marketplace as you ingredient out has been disrupted, with the previous 'clunkers' destroyed rather of filtering down via the marketplace layers. Now bunches of people finding for that government handout have been moved up into autos they're going to possibly bail out on like each and all of the foreclosed properties flooding the marketplace. And final yet not least is the ask your self that Unca 0 is treating that $4500 handout as TAXABLE earnings! ask your self, ask your self, ask your self. Sucka!

I fail to see how it harms them, although buying foreign make "status symbol" cars does hurt the domestic auto manufacturing and the entire industry which supports them.
I find status symbols to be silly and shallow in general, but not harmful. Nor is there any intent to hurt the lower class. However, it doesn't really make much sense to expect people to consider the effects (non-existant, by the way) on the lower class of their purchase choice.
Whether they look down on other people, that's their character defect, and in no way harms the other people.
Talk about trying to blame everything on the rich!

human nature.it;s funny how we tend to act that way about our selves.that;s why we have such a screwed up world.people who have a lot tend to want to give up on life when they lose all that they have.people just can;t be greatful that they have what they do.i;am going to show everybody what i have is the reasoning with someone who seems to have a lot.showing off one;s means even if it hurts others.i don;t care what a person has.it;s the heart of the person that cares the most.you can;t take all your riches with you when you die.but as long as there is a human race here on earth things are going to remain the same.it;s sad but that;s the way it is.

It would never occur to me to look down my nose at someone with less. Fortunate for me that I don't see my possessions as a statement of who I am. It would never occur to me to look down on someone with less. Nor would I own a BMW or Mercedes. If I have more than I need I share it.

What is the point of this question ? Are you bitter at people who can afford nice things ? I live comfortably now because I've made good decisions with my life and have worked very hard. I don't look down on anyone, because life is not always easy. If liberals have animosity towards me because I'm successful, that's just plain pathetic. I believe questions and thinking such as yours, hurts the lower class far more than I ever could.

It should help the lower class gain the ambition to make something of themselves. America is about freedom to make choices about what you're going to do to make money. This is the main reason why communism doesn't work and capitalism does work. Ambition is the key word, though, and those with it may try and fail, but those without it are guaranteed to continue failing.
