I want to buy lowering springs for my boyfriend (and surprise him, which is why I'm asking) and he has a Chevrolet Cobalt, 05 or 06 I'm not sure.

But is there anything else I need to get (I think I understood somewhere something about a spring compressor?)

can anyone please help, I wish I knew more about modifying cars but I don't..

Cobalt Ss Lowering Springs

I own a 2006 Cobalt SS 2.4 (non supercharged). I am looking into doing the same thing. If you are taking the car to have the springs installed, the springs are the only thing you will need to buy. BTW, what experience do you guys have to make you say the Cobalt is a piece of crap? I have 25k miles on mine, and it has been great, mileage around 28mpg in town. With gas at nearly $3 a gallon, I am glad to have the car as a daily driver. I have a 79 Malibu with a 383 stroker that gets 12mpg, so it does not get driven much. I think someone is talking out of their ***. BUY AMERICAN! They are getting to be good cars again.

1. You need a "Spring Compressor" he can rent one at a Pep Boys or AutoZone or any Automotive parts dealer.

2. Torque Wrench (Might be able to rent this too)
3. Bearing Grease(for packing the front struts)
4. I had to use a tie rod puller to get my tie rod knuckle off the spindle. (You can rent this, I did)

If he doesn't have a air compressor and good air tools. The process of replacing coil springs is a nightmare and takes a very long time doing it manually.

You may want to look into "Coilovers" instead of just lowering springs. They are more money but the installaltion and benefits are well worth it.

Good Luck.

if he's going to do the work himself yes he will need a spring compressor. If he's just going to take it to a shop to do the work, then all he need are the springs.

Get a car that isn't a piece of crap would be the first step. Cobalts are pieces of crap, and a waste of time, money and effort.

... please don't lower a cobalt, they look bad enough stock. Get him something with a bigger engine and lower that.
