avi, mp4, mpeg or something else? Also, how do I convert the video file to the desired format for free? I have the 3rd gen nano if that helps

It is a special version of mpeg 4 with iPod specific specs for max speed and size. There are numerous programs on the net which convert movies to iPod compatible formats. Search for "video iPod conversion" on Google.

To have a video for you itunes it needs to be in mp4 format and don't try converting wma to mp4 through itunes because you will just get the video and no audio.

mp4. you may need to purchase some software to convert it, i am unaware of any you can get for free.
