Every few seconds, your computer refreshes what is on the desktop. To do that, each time it re-reads the information for the icons.

If your computer is busy doing other things (especially during boot up), it makes re-reading those icons a low priority. If it has no information for the icons, they will blink out (or change to "generic" icons) until the next refresh. That is normal, see it all the time on computers during bootup.

If they contiune to disappear during normal usage, that usually indicates that your computer does not have enough RAM memory to handle all of the task or programs you are running. When it runs out of memory, the icons (and taskbar) are often the first things dropped.

This can also be caused if the hard drive is extremely full, and the computer is unable to create a large enough swap file (virtual memory).

First, make sure that at least 10% (or a mimimum of 1 gig) of your hard drive is free. And run a defrag to increase perfomance. If that does not do it, consider adding additional RAM memory to the computer.
