Spybot Search and Destroy, and Lavasoft's Ad-Aware SE Personal are free for personal use. The user interfaces are relatively easy to understand and navigate. Each program is thorough. All these programs work really well and i've not had a problem since using them and i have been using them for a long, long time.
Oh, and avoid Norton. It's processor and ram hungry and it still fails to find some virus's that Antivir always seems to find.
