THe question is hard because for the most part when you get a good hitting catcher you end up with a bad fielding catcher, someone who struggles throwing guys out, doesn't defend the plate well or doesn't call a good game behind the plate. The best all around for many years even though he is now declining would be Ivan Rodriguez in Detroit, now you havea few up and coming that are good all around like Mauer and Martin in LA but definitely a hard question for all around. A lot of good catchers are paid for their defense, leadership and game calling and not really for their bat.

Pudge Rodriguez. The first priority of a catcher is defense and pitchcalling. He's the best in baseball behind the plate. He's a solid contact hitter and does the job at the plate. Posada is not the most gifted catcher behind the plate. Average arm and defense. Ausmus is the best catcher in baseball but when you factor in offense he's second to Pudge. Victor Martinez is being moved to first because he's such a "great" catcher and because he can hit.

Maybe I'm just west coast biased, but I would have to say Russel Martin. He won the Silver Slugger award, for the best hitting N.L. catcher (.293 BA, 21 Hr's, 87 RBI), he also won the Gold Glove award for N.L. catchers, on top of that he steals bases (21), and is very durable (121 games played), and he is the unquestioned leader on that team, and in that clubhouse.
Plus he's only 24 so if I had to start a team, and pick a catcher I'd go with him

Personally, I think Mauer is the best catcher, he's young and has already won a batting title. Last year he was hurt and wasn't able to do as well as he can. Martinez does put up better offensive numbers, but he isn't a good defensive catcher, so that hurts him.
Pudge is probably the best over his career for active players, but he is getting old and can't play as well anymore.
Posada is highly overrated because he is a Yankee. This year was a fluke, and he will never hit that well again. He is also a terrible defensive catcher, and the fact that he is being mentioned as an answer shows how narrow minded Yankee fans are.

A push between the two switch hitting catchers Posada and Martinez with the edge to the younger Martinez.

Yadier Molina is the stud right now! Gunning out runners at 45-55% every year. Respectable batting average. Eliminating the Mets in the 2006 NLCS. The kid is eye-popping!

Joe Mauer. Batting title and he's only 24. Plus runners don't run on him because of his gun.
To the one who said Victor Martinez. Victor Martinez can't play defense. The guy can't throw worth crap. Thats why they moved him to first base.

Joe Mauer if we're talking building a new team from scratch. Young yet mature, batting title, great defense!

I'd say Russell Martin. He won the silver slugger award, gold glove and he steals bases. He's also a great leader.
