In the days of King Louis, and King George, government was really there to promote the interests of the kings and their aristocrats. Kings were considered to have God Given powers to rule the rest. Then something happened and revolutions started and the idea of democracy came about..essentially saying that government is there to serve the will of the people, and that literally the will of those millions of poor huddled mostly uneducated and uninformed masses is still actually better for the country as a whole than a few powerful elite and their ideas of how things should be.

If you think that government is best if it represents the will of the few rich and powerful and everyone will benefit from that, then you are oldshool, if you think that government policy serves best the country as a whole if the will of the larger group of people is followed, then you are new school.

Which are you?

By your definition, I am new school.

And by your definition, our present political system is old school.

Vote ANTI-INCUMBENT!

If they have served in the senate, they ARE the problem, not the solution.

"Then something happened and revolutions started and the idea of democracy came about..essentially saying that government is there to serve the will of the people, and that literally the will of those millions of poor huddled mostly uneducated and uninformed masses is still actually better for the country as a whole than a few powerful elite and their ideas of how things should be."

Actually Democracy as a political ideology has been around since the time of Greece. It is not a "New" idea by any means. Pure democracy serves the majority at the expence of the minority. The Death of Plato is an example of this. Pure democracy is nothing more than mob rule. So this fancy picture you paint is a false hood. Those poor hudled masses can be bought, sold, and traded. So there is no perfect nature of government in here. Why do you think Airsotle thought Monarchy was a better form of Govt. than democracy?

Also if you read your history books, it's not the poor masses that start revolutions. It's the weathly upper non-nobility classes. They wanted to make MORE money and have MORE say in government. They could care less about the poor. No one ever cares about the poor. They just say they do to get a populous movement. So to say that the ideals were to bring equality to the masses you my friend would be wrong.

"If you think that government is best if it represents the will of the few rich and powerful and everyone will benefit from that, then you are oldshool"

Wrong again. Government is there to protect the minority, not the other way around. The best government is a government that does nothing. That allows the populations to do as they see fit, to protect the nation from foreign enimies and ensure the rights of the minority are not walked on. By your deffinition unless i'm a socialist/communist i'm old school. Cause i believe it is the Govt's responsablity to foster economic prosperity. Not hinder it.

"if you think that government policy serves best the country as a whole if the will of the larger group of people is followed, then you are new school."

you do realize that the majority of people in this country are middle class. That the poor only make up ~10% of the population and the weathly make up 10%. Then the middle takes up the rest. So your heart felt, communist, style of help the poor is flawed. Cause in reality we should help the middle class. Guess what they want. Lower taxes, better schools(not paying more, but demanding standards and school choice)less governtment, less regulations. All the things you champion and hold up as the ralling cry of the poor masses is exactly what the majority(remember pure democracy here) don't want.

Before you start to think what govt. means and political ideolgies proffess you may want to read some histroy books. You know why have an electoral college? Cause the founding fathers realized that a pure democracy would give to much power to the masses. And that power unchecked would lead to ruin. I agree with them. Pure democracy is a flawed form of govt.

Neither! I follow the Constitution! The way it was written even applys in this time as it did at it's conseption.
If you are talking about adocument that governs a people, this is the best one that has ever been put to pen and ink. It's not a "living document" in the sense that isinterpeted as today.
That's the reason why the Federalist Paper's go hand in hand with the Constitution. It is a guide post to what the framers were thinking,to be used by future bodies,ie; The Supreme Court,to interpret it.
I'm sure the framer's would roll over in their graves [or if they could return serve this government with the Declaration of Independence and start again with new elections] at the way that the Supreme Court has bastardized the interpretation. [Ginsberg's statement,"Wemust look to other Countries interpretations of laws".

What the 3825 is she talking about? These are laws that govern the citizens of this country not some robber socialist country.

Is that supose to be a trick question? Of course we all want the ruling party to be for the majority of people.
But what person in their right mind would think that this government is run by poor people? for poor people?
Every society is run by the rich who are hard working and smart. So they can keep the middle class paying the taxes and working thier butts off just to survive.

The government serves to take care of people who cannot govern themselves.
Laws are written and created by people who need them to dictate their actions for them. People who want governments in their lives are people who want the government to make decisions for them so they don't have to.
The people who support a government filled with rules and regulations are the people who want their lives filled with rules and regulations. They hand over the control of their lives to the government because they simply cannot govern themselves and they don't want to! Those who fight the most for welfare, social security, and government programs are those whose subsistence is wholly dependent on those programs.
As for me, I choose to govern myself. I choose to accept responsibility for my own actions, and I choose to try and survive without demanding assistance from the government. I don't want the government controlling my life.
