Also, how old is your laptop?? Depending on how old the laptop is, the video card in your laptop may not be designed to handle PS 2.0 - which means you'll have to upgrade the video card. Which is a pain in laptops, so you may want to get a new one.
I also believe, though, that the shader version is built into the video card- meaning you can't change it, since it wasn't necessary designed for higher resolution shading. But I'm not entirely sure about that.
Oh, and to the guy above me, of course he downgraded. It's a Mac commercial- aka don't buy Microsoft. So of course they going to make Microsoft look as bad as possible. But Vista is a pain- but I haven't had any problems with it

Your problems may be way bigger than just Pixel Shader version...
Generally speaking, operating system upgrade on a notebook should be considered dangerous. Notebooks contain a variety of custom components that are typically tested for compatibility ONLY with the operating system that will be pre-installed by the manufacturer. Some of those components can actually be damaged by newer operating systems. Granted, the chance of that happening is very small, but it is not zero, and you won't know something went wrong until it's too late...
Look back at XP's early adoption; people had all kinds of problems back then, because they had hardware that was not XP-compatible...

Look like it is a software issue not a hardware issue. I think you should back up the stuff you want to save and then do a fresh install of Windows Vista because it is alway the best way to do is a fresh install.

As far as I know you can update to Vista without Shader Model 2. It runs in a reduced function mode ie. No Aero etc
As the previous answer(er?!) said there is no point upgrading to Vista yet, especially if you don't have a very good laptop.

There probably is, I would look on the notebooks manufacture website first before anywhere else.
But do yourself a favor, dont go with Vista yet. It is still having a lot of compatibility issues with alot of hardware and software.

Don't Upgrade!!! It's not worth all the extra added headaches and hassles!!!
Haven't you seen those Mac commercials where the PC "spokesman" says that he downgraded from Vista back to XP?

You don't explain what OS you are using, but we can presume that it is Win XP or Win 2k. If you want to upgrade, use windows XP sp2. It will run best on your laptop.
FYI: press the WIndows key on your keyboard and the Pause key at the same time to see what hardware you have.
