Because it fits the ideology well.
What they fail to understand, that it's a one size fits all attitude. That everyone should be like them. Which is a basic communist principle. Which is as un-American as I can imagine.
So what I say to them, "How does it feel to be of a more of a communist, then an American?"
I am not kidding.
Peace

Because as a person and human being you should have the personal responsibility to take care of your self. We are a nation of independent people. Making one man responsible for not only him self but others as well is unfair. Individuals are responsible for the well being of them selves and their families. I would NEVER expect any help form my neighbor or the government if i fell on hard times. That is not to say that my neighbor would not give, that's called charity. When the government gives that's called welfare.
If each person took care of his future we would not need Social Security, we would not have generational poverty. Because one person in the generation would stand up and stop being a victim.
This country was founded and made great by individuals. Not groups of people. Not communes. If you feel the need to give 50% of your pay check to the government to pay for the poor, then give you money straight to the poor, the govt will waist the majority of it.

Not everything, certainly, but it would make a huge dent in the problems of the world.
As only one example:
Imagine if everyone decided to take care of his or her body. They exercised regularly, ate healthy foods, didn't smoke or do drugs. While in this country these things are your choice, it's also your choice to take care of yourself. Less people would be succumbing to heart disease, certain cancers, a cleaner environment, fewer needle diseases contracted, fewer need for drug treatment programs, care for drug babies and od cases, fewer type II diabetics, fewer obese people with aging joints, etc. The list goes on and on. This is personal responsibility.
It's just one of a number of things you can take as important to do. While it's not mandated, if you screw up you need to take responsibility for your own choices and stop blaming everyone else.

Most sane people believe personal responsibility is very important. Don't you think personal responsibility is high on the priority list?
I certainly do.

It isn't that simple. Conservatives do believe in government. There are many things that the government can and should handle.
However, we should not look to the government to handle things that individuals should take care of themselves. We should not look to the government to reallocate resources by penalizing those who have succeeded and rewarding those who failed.
Where are individual responsibile for their own decisions? Liberals would have us believe that individuals are not responsible for anything, its all the government's responsiblity.

I am a Democrat and I firmly believe that myself. I just don't see the logic in things like wanting to take away government aid and then raising hell about a minimum wage increase that might take a lot of people of the welfare roles. That to me is not helping people to help themselves

So.. you're not responsible for your choices? Then who is?
Are you not responsible for the choice to take advantage of the opportunities offered to you? Who else is supposed to be responsible?
You're a human being, capable of reason and judgement and being in control of your own life.

Um- just who or what exactly dictates your choices?
What defines personal responsibility for you?
Would it be acknowledging your choices as yours and yours alone- would it be paying your own way-
I am responsible for my choices and where they have gotten me in life.
Wouldn't make much sense to blame it on anyone else, now would it?

i believe in personal responsibility
of our culture to take care of those we have left damaged by capitalism
take a couple sociology classes and you will understand why all sociologists are liberals...
because capitalism creates a few winners and a lot of losers
it also scars some of the lower class that it burns
these people are not able to function from these scars
if we damaged them then it is our responsibility to care for them

why shouldn't i?. it is not the place of any entity to be your caretaker. i think this has been lost on the last generation. if i fail it is because i did not prepare or plan well enough. if we place it on say, the gov, then who do you blame when things go wrong? it is the basis of a well rouded person.

who said they do?
the cons don't want to take responsibility for anything that happened on their watch.
they won't take responsibility for 9/11, the katrina aftermath, the declining dollar, the growing deficit, the porous border, or the outting of a cia undercover agent.
cons may 'say' that they want to be all about personal responsibility but their actions say something completely different.
