19 is considered an adult. Once you turn 18, you're an adult. Therefor at 19, you are an adult.

18 is considered being an "adult" because that is the age when your credit starts, you can move out, and you are held legally responsible for everything that you do. I don't know who determined that, but that's the way it is.

If you check your history the age changed in the early 70's from 21 to 18. Vietnam war and the draft had allot to do with it and the fact young people where more politically active. If young adults 17-20 where more politically active the 21yr old drinking age would be repealed and put to where it belongs at 18. Also at 18 you are finished high school and need to be free to live your life as you see fit at this point be it college, work, raising a family, military etc. After being in at 17 and serving 11 yrs with young men women 17+ that entire brain not developing theory is a load of crap. Many young adults are very capable of making various life or death and other decisions. No one is under more pressure than those serving overseas with IED's all around them and they perform very well. Studies can be slanted to give the outcome you want to have.

When someone turns 18 they are considered a "legal" adult because according to laws in place they now have full legal ability to make their own decisions and to accept the consequences for them. You aren't considered an adult at 16 or 17 because legally your parents are still responsible for you (and the consequences for a majority of your decisions). The reason why the age is 18 is just because that's the status quo.

Personally I don't feel that most people become "adults" until much older than 18. Even though I was living on my own and made my own decisions since I was 18 it wasn't until I was in my twenties that I started to feel like an "adult".

Globally accepted and justified, 18 is the age for adolescence.

There are some qualities that symbolize adultness in most cultures. Not always is there a concordance between the qualities and the physical age of the person.

The adult character comprises:

* Self-control - restraint, emotional control.
* Stability - stable personality, strength.
* Independence - ability to self-regulate.
* Seriousness - ability to deal with life in a serious manner.
* Responsibility - accountability, commitment and reliability.
* Method/Tact - ability to think ahead and plan for the future, patience.
* Endurance - ability and willingness to cope with difficulties that present themselves.
* Experience - breadth of mind, understanding.
* Objectivity - perspective and realism.

i think it should be 16. They know what they want and even tho they are not mature enough, some are and they need this. 16 and 17 year olds know what they want and they will do whatever it takes to get it anyway. I mean I see 12 year olds smoking cigarettes so either they are considered adults they still get what they want.

personally, I think that it should be determined by the individual, not by the status quo. Some people mature faster than others. For instance, there are several 26 year old people that act younger than my 15 year old brother does.

But I think that the 18 age limit goes back to Roman times... not sure, might want to check on that.

I'd put the legal adult age at 21... most 18 year olds act like they're 12....

The brain is not done maturing until 21, so I think that should be the age of adulthood. Of course when I was teenager I didn't think this, I thought I was all grown up. But now at 28 I can see much more clearly now.

Because you've graduated highschool, you move out, you can sign legally binding contracts, and your credit starts.
