Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King is a good turn-based RPG. It is created by Square-Enix (Final Fantasy creators). It's for the PS2, and it has a very classic, old-school feel. It's great, one of my all-time favorite RPGs. Here is an IGN review if you'd like to read it. (They rated it a 9/10)

Chrono Trigger (Super Nintendo) and Chrono Cross (Playstation) are also good games that were made by square.
Also -- Chrono Trigger, and the early Final Fantasy games have been released for the playstation.
See Final Fantasy: Chronicles and Final Fantasy: Origins
Another one is Super Mario RPG: legend of the seven stars (Super Nintendo) [Kind of old, but very good].
Also -- Kingdom Hearts 2 is worth a try -- story is great, and gameplay is better than the first (still not menu based though).

I knoe exactly what you are talking about. I had started playing Dungeons and Dragons at the age of 8 or 9. (I am 32 now.) I get VERY picky on my games.
One of my ALL-TIME favorites, is for the first playstation: Final Fantasy Tactics.
You can make your party any of a dozen different classes. You can customize your characters. And it goes at YOUR speed, while giving the commands. (Each character gets a turn)
Give it a try, if you haven't already. Some of the graphics that you see fromsome of the Summoners spells are awesome.
P.S.: If you do try it, make a character a Ninja Class, earn the "Sword w/ both hands" ability, then go back to the Knight job, and wreak havoc w/ 2 huge swords!

Sorry, i ought to artwork interior the computing device marketplace, yet I nevertheless like taking part in video games around a table, head to head with pals.
