i think that though it's over, and he's moved on (?), he still feels good about having had you for however long it was. obviously he still thinks about you. but for some, once is enough, you know what I mean?

Well, it's obvious he still thinks about you, because even though the lyrics indicate that it was good while it lasted, he's not sorry it's ended; he took the time to send it and if he weren't at least thinking about you, he wouldn't have bothered. However, I think this door is closed...at least for now. Sorry.

I think it means that when he tried to talk, he basically couldn't think of what to say, if he didn't even remember your name. That last part describes what he wanted to tell you, but somehow, couldn't find the way to say it.
