Actually the term came from a real thing. Your car has a firewall in between the engine and the passenger compartment. It protects you from fire if your engine ignites. For the internet the term was just borrowed because it serves the same purpose. To protect your computer from harmful things.

In building, a "firewall" is a special wall placed between two sections of a building that is extra fire resistence. It is suppose to keep a fire in one section of the building from being able to spread to another but separating the two sections.

A computer "firewall" serves the same purpose. It places a "barrier" between your network and the rest of the Internet. Supposedly it will stop any viruses, hackers, etc from spreading into your network.

I don't believe there was a "who", but here's the "why".
