Yesterday someone gave me a wireless router which I have plugged into my DSL modem and then into my computer. Does anyone know where on the computer I can go to rename it and perhaps set a password?

Click on the Start button
Select Run
Type in: cmd
A DOS window should appear
type in:ipconfig
several lines of information will appear - the last should be the Default Gateway (that is a techy name for your router)
It will have a number like: 192.168.0.1 listed for it.

Open Internet Explorer and in the address bar type the number the format: \\192.168.0.1 (Put the \\ in front of it)

This should open the set up page for your router
As each brand is different, you will have to hunt through the set up for the place where you can set the name (often called the SSID) and the password (often called either WEP or WPA)

You can secure it by going into the modem's configuration admin menu (differs from router to router, I get mine by getting to the browser and typing the IP address of the router) and getting the security tab and entering a new admin password and type of security... but be danged careful to write all that crap down and be prepared to reconfigure all the other connecting devices, as they'll need to be able to reconnect, too!

Do what the other people suggested above, but use WPA (or WPA-PSK) encryption instead of WEP. WEP can be cracked in minutes. Make sure you use a secure password for WPA though.

Also, change the default router user and pass.

you need to log into your router...
in the addy bar type in your router gateway address...you cann find out what it is by going into Start>run>cmd>ipconfig...
copy down the gateway address...
go into internet explorer and type the gateway address in the address bar...then you will have to know what the user name and passwrd is for the router..by default many are
user:admin
passwrd:password/admin
then you can change the Network name(SSID) and set up security(WEP)
hope it helps

depending on the router, you need to connect it to your PC/laptop and log into the configuration page. its all in the instructions. In addition you won't be able to get it to work on the DSL until you add your dsl username and password into the router.
