I agree with whoever said it's programmed into us. It's one of the reasons I'm totally against primary schools being allowed to indoctrinate small children with Bible teachings. They're so eager to plase and so impressionable that they take it all in, and then when they are old enough to start asking questons and wanting logical answers it's all so difficult because what was programmed into us although we don't necessarily believe in it any longer, has so much fear attached to it all, that it's hard to completely break free from it.
Maybe it's a genetic thing, something passed on to us by our ancestors, in times of trouble, look up ...

You are not a bit unusual in this! I think that it is the old old thing that under extreme stress or in dire circumstances, your instincts take over.
Before PC took over most schools used to have a morning Assembly when a prayer was said and we sang a hymn. Kids went to Sunday School, some sang in church choirs, we did Bible study at school (Aargh).
As you get older and more cynical and 'cast aside childish things' you convince yourself that you're an atheist. In fact most people are agnostic rather than atheist and that is the reason, when things go wrong we revert to our culture and offer up a prayer.

Indeed, there is a prescence that is felt...it could be the God of Cristians, but....read the Bhagavad Gitas, Hindi Sacred Writings...make a study of ancient religions via the internet...they all have one thing in common. There is a Divine Supreme Being, whether they called him Quetlcoatl(Aztec), Viracocha(Maya, Inca), Amon-Ra(Egyptian), etc.

I do believe that Christ is the latest manifestation of this Supreme Diety...that may go against, or even offend people who read this...but, I find no fault in believing there is a Supreme Diety, no matter the name attached. Thank you.

I'm not sure if their is a God but it makes sense that man would invent a powerful deity in order to deal with the inevitability of their own death. I choose not to question it too deeply and I try and look within myself for answers. What other's call "the Holy Spirit" answering their pleas, I like to think of as my own inner resolve or sub conscience guiding me through. However, I try to respect the beliefs of others and I like to keep an open mind. And any non religious funeral I have been to has left me searching for a spititual side to my life because of how cold they were.

Society has created such an expectation that there is a whole pretend world up in the sky. I'm an atheist too but sometimes I'll think up there just out of habit, not because I think someone is up there who might really influence what happens.

You're not an Atheist. You're Agnostic. You believe in a higher power and you seek it when your troubled. I am like that as well.

Were you a theist before? If so I might say you are having a hard time letting go and maybe you are better suited towards agnosticism. Or maybe you do it purely out of habit. You know, they say bad habits are hard to break. (Who in the heck are 'they' anyway?)

You are what we call an "agnostic"

It basically means there is something out there, we just are not sure what it is. Jesus showed a lot of signs of this actually.

Your either a goldfish or confused. Whichever way you choose to live life is your choice, however may I suggest that you never should ride the fence on any one issue. Live strong, bold, and fearless. No regrets.
