No, but by observing its patterns of thought, feeling, and reactions YOU the observer can. The ego is only our conditioned sense of identity, made up of the beliefs about self and the world based on our treatment and relationships as a child, i.e. I am valued, lovable, respected, admired, powerful, stupid, worthless, unloveable, etc.

Embedded beliefs not only control our experience of reality through misperception and inappropriate defensive behavior, but our experience mirrors the conflicted thinking that is a result of our indoctrinated beliefs.

The ego IS entirely illusion and exists in a delusional reality, but YOU - your authentic Self is not your ego.

The ego is the mind, the tool that distinguishes and classifies what we perceive into good or bad for living. It can very clearly know that if a truck comes barrelling down the highway, you should move out of the way. Those who have trouble "penetrating that illusion" aren't around to tell.

Now, our minds have more difficulty distinguishing a good man from a bad one, one that if we have a relationship will bring us sorrow rather than happiness, for example. That's a much more difficult knowledge to acquire than the truck heading towards us. Our minds do not delude us unless our concepts are irrational. Irrational concepts are acquired from our education and culture. They are mistaken concepts which will impede our knowledge of reality instead of enhance it. With irrational concepts we see bad as good and good as bad, just like if we wore someone else's glasses, we could not read well or at all.

Hi Rena, I would say that the ego cannot penetrate it`s own illusion. Because walking in Christ is walking unselfish and with understanding of God`s laws and rules.

Yes there is the false ego and the actual ego. First one has to understand the basics, such as-

We are not this material body, IE; Race, color, nationality, Religion, mind, intellect, senses, job, etc. We are all eternal spirit souls, part and parcel of the Supreme Soul, also known as Krishna, Allah, Jehovah, Vishnu, etc. We never die, only this mortal body dies.
This material world is not our real home, it is called Maya (illusion) and is temporary and full of misery, only one fourth of the souls come here, and the rest are enjoying blissful eternal loving relationships with our Maker named above. We fell here due to envying Gods position. He made the material world for those who want to try to live separately from Him (Which is impossible because He is actually everywhere). After many lifetimes of trying to be happy in this temporary world one becomes frustrated and board and begins to question their existence. We then seek out real happiness, and when one becomes sincere God reveals how to come back Home. Those who are intelligent, take up the process of self realization (Bhakti Yoga) which begins with the chanting of the Maha Mantra (the great mantra for deliverance from all suffering and illusion of this false ego), which gives one real peace, happiness and reality. Then at the end of life they can give up all material attachments and fully surrender to God and return to the eternal Kingdom, where there is no more birth, death, old age, or disease and be eternally happy. I am so glad I know who I actually am.

That depends on how it talks about its self and why and after conferencing with who. What is the conventional language it is using.

An ego read this:

'Outline of Hegel's Phenomenology
INTRODUCTION
1. Our ordinary Knowing has before itself only the object which it knows, but does not at first make an object of itself, i.e., of the Knowing. But the whole which is extant in the act of knowing is not the object alone, but also the Ego that knows, and the relation of the Ego and the object to each other, i.e. Consciousness. '

i think the answer you may be after is that your consciousness can penetrate the illusion of the ego, yes.
it's not easy though. for most people, anyway.
have you read Eckhart Tolle's "The Power of Now"?
it will give you a great starting point.
