PS2 or X box? Are they really worth buying even when the new generation consoles are aout in the market or will I be playing only old games?

I reside in Mexico.
Prices. PS3 700 dollars
Wii 500 dollars
X box 360 400 dollars
PS2 200 dollars
X Box 300 dollars
That's the way it is here in Mexico.

I'd get the PS2. There is a huge selection of PS2 games of every genre imaginable and both the console and the games are really cheap right now. More than likely there will be very few new titles released for the PS2, but the selection of games available is huge. There are plenty of titles to choose from.

If you don't want an expensive console, then buy the Wii. This is a "Next-Generation" Console, albeit a lot more dumbed down than the PS3 and Xbox 360.
Or you could go with a PS2 or Xbox. (I personally have preferred the PlayStation over the Xbox)
If your not sure which to get, find a Blockbuster or other Video Rental Store and see if they rent out consoles. (yes, some of them do) Then rent each one and decide what you like best. If the same game for each console is available, then rent the game for all consoles you rent, that way your comparing the consoles among themselves based on the same game.

I know they're still making PS2 games (the new Sims 2 Castaway was released on PS2, not PS3), so I think you'd be okay if you got one of those. I am happy with my PS2 and don't feel the need to get a PS3 at all.
I'd probably recommend a Wii as well, although you'll have difficulty finding one now. It's $250 retail. Aside from being able to play Wii games, you can play Gamecube games (I don't really see Nintendo making a lot of those, but you can certainly get used ones) and you can purchase games for the Nintendo, Super Nintendo, Sega Genesis, N64, and a few other "old" consoles that you can play on the Wii.

We have an Xbox, Xbox 360, PS2, Wii, GameCube, 64, SuperNintedo and a Dreamcast. The Xbox, PS2 and Wii are my favorites for game play. The Xbox is the easist to operate when it comes to movies and listening to music.

The PS2 is fun, and so is the Nintendo GameCube (I have both), but it might be a bit late to get into those.
I also own a Wii and a PS3. I highly reccommend the Wii if you want something fun but inexpensive (it functions as a GameCube too, and has virtual console....it's 3 systems in one).

I would go to a video game resale store. I picked up a system still in wrapper with 2 controllers for $25

the wii is an affordable console with great game play, alternatively you could pick up one of the newer consoles second hand.
