I've done both. My grandson and I picked out two children to give Christmas to on a tree at one of our well known discount monopolies and bought them the items they needed and their wishes for Christmas. I believe it is through the Salvation Army.
And I'm going conservatively for my family this year.
People have become far too materialistic and it is actually very unhealthy for people to feel pressure to deliver the goods that they cannot afford without resorting to credit cards. I pay cash so I usually feel good about my giving and don't feel pressured later on with evil creditors since I don't have any.

It has been proven that conservatives give 10 times as much as liberals, so I will give conservatively.
(Yes, this was an actual study done by the Salvation Army. They studied the donations of several places in affluent neighborhoods of San Francisco and St. Louis, and the results were rather eye-opening.)

Conservatively.
With a recession on the horizon and a house we can't sell (for any reasonable price) still sitting on the market, the wife and I are severely cutting back on expenses, starting with Christmas.
