that an unheated fish bowl/tank will be the same temp? I believe humidity plays a major role in the resulting temp of an unheated fish bowl/tank at room temp. For example, if room temp is 72 degrees this does not necessarily mean the water in an unheated bowl/tank will be the same, correct? I am trying to explain to someone that they need a tank heater to ensure a consistent temperature in a fish tank because ambient air temp doesn't necessarily translate into that being the temperature of the water.

Incorrect. The ambient air temp and the water temp will be identical over time.

If the ambient room temperature is 72, it stands to reason that every other object in that room will have a temperature of 72. If you were to bring in an object that had a higher or lower temperature, that objects' temperature will soon equalize with the room's temperature also. Pour a glass of water with ice cubes, wait a few hours. The temperature of the water has warmed to the ambient temperature of the room. The fish tank is also at ambient room temperature. The energy levels of all the objects will tend to balance out at the same level over time.

DOesn't mean that is the temp in the fish tank. I heater is needed to regulate the temp for the fish. That 72 degrees is how hot or cold it is by the thermostat, over on the other side of the room it may be a few degrees hotter or colder.

You would be correct in recommending the heater. Even if room temp. is 72 degrees most of the time wherever you are, it stands to reason that it isn't ALWAYS 72 degrees. Small temperature fluctuations will kill some fish while others are rather resistant to temperature changes.

You might attempt to explain to them too that you KNOW ABSOLUTELY NOTHING AT ALL about ice-hole-fishing.
