What prevents anyone from saying they are gay in order to get the same protections as gays?

How would you prove a person was gay or not?

And what would be the point of anti gay discrimination laws if everyone said they were gay?

Honest question. I hope I don't offend anyone.

I think that most of the people looking for protective laws are people that are obviously supportive of gay rights and don't want to be punished for it.
For example, a friend of mine was photographed at a gay pride event in Atlanta and lost his job because it wasn't the "family image" that his company wanted associated with it. Anti discrimination laws would prevent both gays and people who supports gay rights from being penalized. In fact, my friend isn't gay. He was just there supporting his friends.

Personally, I would like to know that I can apply for a mortgage or car loan with another female (whether a partner or a friend) and know that it won't be denied just because someone assumes we are lesbians.

A law is just a law. It is only good if it is respected.
There will be always ersons to cheat it.
But for the least the existence of a law against discrimination toward GLBT community would be a good thing, as it seems alas the only way to give a little protection and respect to the victims of homophobia.

I'm not aware of the specific anti-discrimination legislation you talk about (I live in the UK) but surely the laws are to give gay people the same protection as everyone else. Everyone should be able to live without fear of ridicule, persecution, discrimination or hatred. Unfortunately racism, homophobia, sexism and lots of other isms and obias are rife in society. Sadly while we have protections for people to practise the beliefs, the same courtesy is often not extended by those that do not follow those same beliefs.

If Barney Frank's anti- gay discrimination laws were passed we'd be closer to having the same rights as straights. In Oklahoma the nutcake that beat the 62 year old gay guy to death as an enterance exam to the Aryan Nation would be serving extra time because he'd have been charged with a hate crime. ( OK doesn't consider crimes against gays to be hate crimes)

Hmmm...interesting. I would volunteer to test whether guys were gay--on a selective basis, of course. :-)
