Don't listen to those other people's comments because they don't know what they are taking about. When you are on birth control pills, you do not ovulate. That is what birth control pills do, stop ovulation. Now to answer your question, you are protected during the week when you are taking the reminder pills. You do not NEED a back up method. You do not have to take the reminder pills. they are there so that you stay in the habit of taking a pill everyday, so you don't forget to take your active pills. You do not have to start another pack. Just make sure to start you active pills on time and you will be fine. I have been on birth control for 5 years and I never take the reminder pills and everything is great. I hope i put your mind at ease.

If you have been taking the non-placebo pills (the ones that aren't white) and haven't missed any of those, you should be ok. The white ones really are just reminders....there is no medication in them. They are just so you don't get out of the habit of taking the pill everyday and then forget one of the real ones. If you miss one, toss out that reminder pill and pretend like you took one that day.
If you've just recently started taking the pill as your birth control method (like in the last month or two), I would still use some other form of protection as your body may still be adjusting. Otherwise, you should be fine. If you continue with the next pack and skip the white pills, all you get is the added bonus of no period while the bf is in town.

They have the placebo week in there only as a reminder to take your pill at the same time each day. You are as protected that week as you are the active pill weeks, which is 99% effectiveness AS LONG AS you take one pill each day at the same time each day, as PRESCRIBED in the pamphlet that came with your pills.
Don't take the active pills back to back without a DOCTOR's permission.
Just remember that ANY TIME you have sex (before/after/during period, on birth control or not) you DO risk the chance of pregnancy. Whether it be 1% or more chance, its still a chance!

There are 3 weeks of every month, that a woman is protected from pregnancy. The week prior, during, and after the period. The pill adds protection, but it is not guaranteed to work 100%. During the week you are menstruating, you are safe from pregnancy.

You're fine. I'm that way every month, (I don't start until a bit over halfway through my placebo pills) and it's never once been an issue. Your body isn't ovulating then.

It is my understanding that two weeks after the start of your period is when you are most likely to get pregnant. If it is the week of your period than you are not ovulating. I would talk to your doc but I would still use a condom just to be safe.
