I can't see why it would be, especially for the elderly who are already on a tight budget to begin with (usually)...a gift card should be welcomed

The etiquette of gift giving has changed. Gift cards used to say that you don't know the person well enough or you don't want to take the time to get a person gift. Not so anymore. Today, we are blessed with so much. It's tough to find the perfect gift. And most people don't want more stuff! So the gift card is good.

Now, with all that said, your grandmother's generation was different. She might find it a bit tacky. Only you know how hip and up on all things "today" she is.

The best thing you could give your grandmother is time. Give her a date out to dinner or a movie with you. I bet she'd love it.

Good luck and merry Christmas!

A gift card is a great idea. Especially if you present it in a special package or something cute.

Your Grandmother will be able to buy whatever she wants with a visa gift card.

Cash in the amount of a gift card in a card would be fine if you do not know what to purchase. However, a gift card limits where they are able to shop. I would not find this to be tacky, however, some people are very funny. So just make sure you are aware of the personality of the person you are giving the suggested cash gift to or the gift card if you know they wont mind or feel insulted go for it. However, truly the person should be gratful you even thought about them at all, it is really about the fact that you even thought to give them something. good luck and God bless

I think that gift cards are fine. But, I usually like to give them with a little something else. Maybe a box of chocolates or some Hickory Farms stuff that they sell this time of year. Nothing expensive of course. Just so that they have more than just an envelope to open. Sometimes, I even make cookies and wrap them up and give them with the gift cards.

You can't go wrong with gift cards. In fact, that is what I get a few people in my family. It is not tacky at all.....everyone loves gift cards so they can get what they want instead of having to take something someone else gives you and maybe never using it.

It's not tacky, it's just quite impersonal. The only people in my family I get gift cards for are my teenage brothers, because honestly teenage boys are not the easiest to buy for. If your grandmother is hip with the times, she would probably appreciate the freedom of it. Unlike my grandmother who wouldn't understand the concept.

Good luck!

I don't think gift cards are tacky, but the Visa cards are annoying. They are such a hassle. Having money or a card to a specific store is much better.

Not at all! Presents are just a way we deal with Christmas! It of course is not "Suppose" to be about gifts! It is a celebration of love to mankind! Gifts were presented as a special way bring your feelings to someone special on Christmas! Nowadays it is practically mandatory we give gifts! Macy's loves it! WalMart Loves it! Sears, Penney's and the whole lot love it! " Ka ching" "Ka ching" goes the registers! My family has quit giving gifts you buy to ones we make! It is far more special! It is the Christmas Spirit after all!

Not tacky at all. I think most ppl would rather have a gift card, so they can get what they want or need. I buy them for certain family members every yr.*
