He's 8. I would not recommend a PSP at that age. Most of the games on it are violent and definitely not kid-friendly. However, the DS has a wide selection of kid's games. Here are a few:
Mario Kart DS- A fun, colorful racing game with Mario and all of his friends! Perfect if your son loves racing.
Animal Crossing: Wild World- In this simulation game, you arrive in a town full of talkative animals, get a job, decorate your ever-growing home, and you are able to fish, catch bugs, and visit friends! The best game for that age.
The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass- In this game, you play as Link, a young boy who wakes up on a beach after pirates attack your ship and kidnap your girlfriend. You must solve puzzles, wield a sword, and battle monsters in order to save your girl. (ages 9+)
Super Mario 64 DS- A wide-roaming world is yours to explore as Mario, Luigi, Wario, or Yoshi in this remake of the hit N64 game. Play as the above named characters in order to save Princess Peach from Bowser's clutches.
Drawn to Life- This game is unique. In it, there is no hero. YOU must draw him, his weapon, and anything he needs. The ability to draw characters that move when you finish with them is amazing, and gives a real sense of accomplishment when finished.
Metroid Prime Hunters- Maybe not so much this game as the others. In this game you play as Samus Aran, bounty hunter for the Galactic Federation. Nine artifacts from the ruins of an old planet have been stolen by six bounty hunters. It is up to you to recover them, discover the secret to ultimate power, and most importantly, kill or be killed. (12+)
Pokemon Diamond/Pearl- As a young Pokemon Trainer, you must capture 493 elusive Pokemon in a quest to complete your Pokemon encyclopedia. Along the way, thwart the evil Team Galactic's goals for world domination, and rescue the Pokemon that they have captured. But high on Mt. Coronet, something ancient has been woken...
Now, onto why you should get your son a DS instead of a PSP. The PSP is more teen-oriented. I enjoy it, but I'm 15. The DS offers interactivity that makes playing video games good for your son. Here are some of the DS's features:
Dual Screens- With two screens, you can easily play your game, check inventory, draw pictures, and more.
Touch Screen- All DS games utilize this feature in one way or another. You can draw pictures, open puzzles, and organize inventory easier than ever with this screen. Also, the DS has a built-in touch screen program called Pictochat, which allows you to draw pictures and send them to all DS users within twenty feet.
Microphone- Located right in between the two screens, the microphone is used for speaking words to your puppy (Nintendogs), blowing up balloons (Mario Kart DS), and even creating gusts of wind (Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass)!
3D Graphics- Most DS games are in 3D. (The games named above are all in 3D.) Unlike PSP's dreary, dark graphics, the bright colors of the kid-friendly DS appeal to kids and parents alike. Irresistably colorful worlds are yours to explore with unprecedented levels of gaming on the DS.
Durability- My own DS has been dropped, banged up, and scratched up, but it still runs just as well as the day I bought it. DS's are incredibly durable, because Nintendo designed them with kids (your son's age) in mind. Drop it? Still works. Sit on it? Still works. Drop it into water? Well, that's highly pushing it. My point is, it was built for kids, so most anything your son does with it won't harm it. This durability protects it long enough to last about 3-4 years.
On the other hand, take Sony's PSP and drop it, and you've just lost $200 worth of games. Many PSP owners have complained that their's broke just because they sat on it or something. (And these are teenagers! Imagine what an 8 year old would do to it!) The warranty is very precise, and any damage you do to it will be coming from your wallet. I highly recommend the DS over the PSP in that respect.
So there you have it. A bunch of great games for your son. If I was picking these out for you, I think I would get your son a red DS Lite, Mario Kart DS, Animal Crossing: Wild World, Pokemon Diamond, and Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass. Those games are perfect for his age, and I cannot stress that enough. Good luck, and Merry Christmas!

If it were my kid, I would go with the DS. Nintendo is more child friendly as far as games go. It is much cheaper than the PSP and younger gamers enjoy it more. The second screen is a touch screen that allows unique interaction with the games that is not available with any other portable. The battery life is also better with the DS. The PSP is superior as far as its capabilities go, (better graphics, beautiful screen, mp3, movies) but an eight year old probably just wants to play games. As far as all of the other functions of the PSP, forget about them. The PSP is a portable game system first, all of the other funcitons (mp3 player, movies) are just extras. It has the capability to do these other things, but not very well. If he wants a mp3 player or portable dvd player, the stand alone units are better. Besides psp movies probably wont be around for much longer anyway.

When my brother was 7 I bought him a DS that he still has and he is 10 years old. The reason why I bought him a DS is because I know PSP has better technology but he was to younge for a PSP and I didn't want him to lose it. Now that he is 10 and he is teaching me how to do things and short cuts on the computer I have desided to buy him a PSP because it has more features than a DS...ex: He can watch movies, go on the internet, hear music, and it has better graphics than a DS. I would recommed a DS 1st because it fits the age group and you will see how your child takes care of it. Hope this helps

DS is better. Our 8 year old has a DS that has one side hinge broken and it still works. It's about 3 years old. Not sure about DS Lite, husband's only had one of those a few months. We bought our 10 year old a PSP last Christmas and the analog stick broke on it. So it didn't even last a year. Good luck!

The PSP consists of toned down Playstation games (which aren't that good on the high-end platforms) while the DS enjoys games which are specifically designed for it as well as having innovative features.
The PSP is basically a super expensive Gameboy with boring games while the DS is gaming on a new level with intuitive games.

For an 8 year old, the Nintendo DS is the way to go. It is more oriented towards kids and theres educational games you can buy as well. Plus, the DS will save you some money.

Depends on what you want him to play. DS is more kid friendly. We just bought then for our kids. They can take them anywhere and can play multiplayer/connect with each other or friends. A lot of kids seem to have one of these.
I find that PSP games are too violent and graphic for them right now at this stage. They are 4-6-8 years old. I know, because I play them myself.
Then after that I still wouldn't get a PSP, I prefer PC Gaming. ;)
(Always upgradable)

I say DS. I'm thirteen and I've been asking for one too! Hehe. It's more kid-friendly, plus there's a very cute game out called "Nintendogs" that my brother plays for hours on end with his friend. They're cheaper too. :D
