My mom is RH- and my dad is A+. My nurse just called and said that my blood type is A- and that I'll need Rhogam (sp) shots in my 28th week and during labor. What are these shots??

I have the same thing. It is because your blood is Rh-, and your baby's might be Rh+. If baby's blood and your blood mix during labor, your body will make antibodies to the Rh. Next time you get pregnant, if their blood is Rh+, your body will fight the baby because it sees it as a foreign object that's not supposed to be there. They give you the Rhogam shot to make sure you won't have any problems in future pregnancies. It's a necessary thing, but it's really no big deal.

When the mother is Rh- and the baby is Rh+ the mother's blood will recognize the babies blood as an infection and will try to fight it off. It use to cause serious problems. Now however, they can give you a Rhogam shot during your pregnancy and it will prevent any problems with the two different blood types. It is only a problem if the mother is negative and the baby is positive. But since they won't know the babies blood type until it is born, they just give you the shot if you are Rh-.

Okay, here's the deal. If you are Rh- and your baby is + (which it may or may not be) your body will, during this pregnancy, produce anti-bodies to Rh+ blood. It will not effect this baby, because baby will be good and strong before you produce enough antibodies to hurt it. However, future pregnancies could be effected. You would still have these anti-bodies with the next baby and it could cause you to miscarry in the future, if baby number 2 is Rh+ (which it may or may not be). The rhogam prevents your body from ever creating these anti-bodies. You only need the shot once in your life time. And I am sad to say that it hurts and stings, but its worth it. Hope that was clear enough, I made my dr explain it to me about 3 times.

Hi! Rhogam is a human gamma globulin (antibodies) directed against the Rh positive factor of blood. It is given to Rh negative mothers who give birth to Rh positive babies. The shot is designed to prevent these moms from becoming sensitized to the baby, rh+ blood. Once the mom becomes sensitized to this rh factor, there is the possibility of mom's immune system destroying the red blood cells of her next child. Historically, babies born after mom's immune system destroyed their blood cells acquire hemolytic disease of the newborn (HDN). 1 These babies require exchange transfusions after they are born. Such transfusions can now be done in utero!!!!! i hope i was able to help!! miracle

When your blood type is a negative, there is a chance that your immune system will start to attack you and your baby close to birth.

The rhogam shot helps the body to recognize the baby as a non threatening entity. Its very necessary.
