Can someone give me a good and clear definition of an elegy?

An elegy is a memento mori, a poem dealing with things long past, of loss, of death, and sad things;
of things best forgotten or of memories long treasured. Sometimes associated with eulogies and epitaphs, though not always quite that sad.

Elegy Definition

Did you mean eulogy? A eulogy is a speech or writing that praises a person. They are generally said at funerals.

Aha! My basic latin comes into the fray once more.

An elegy should probably be a poem that is used to mourn.

Also, according to wikipedia:

Elegy was originally used for a type of poetic metre (Elegiac metre), but is also used for a poem of mourning, from the Greek elegos, a reflection on the death of someone or on a sorrow generally - which is a form of lyric poetry. An elegy can also reflect on something which seems strange or mysterious to the author. In addition, an elegy (sometimes spelled elegíe) may be a type of musical work, usually in a sad and somber attitude. It is not to be confused with a eulogy.

Hope that helps!

The word "elegy" can refer to any sad or mournful poem, but it usually refers to a poem about someone's death. Typically an elegy expresses grief and tries to come to terms with the loss of someone the poet loved or admired.

Tastes to me like Tutti Frutti.
George and Lester, Sam and Rudi,
Sitting knitting a baby bootie
Got shat upon by elephant doody.
Said George and Lester, Sam and Rudi,
Hmm, tastes to me like Tutti Frutti."
