I'm really wondering, why don't people just search for their answers on Google, Yahoo search or Wikipedia?

90% of all questions here can be found with a search engine.

And I understand that for some questions you need a personalized answer; but for things like:
"When was Berry White born?" you could just use a search engine.

This is an excellent question.
My dad was saying the exact same thing when he saw me using this.
I've asked a couple of questions only because I couldn't find them out on the internet. Now I look back at them as a nice waist of five points since I called my uncle and got all the answers.
There's almost always a way to find the answer somewhere else, but using this is quick and easy.

I'm sure those people who want just a factual answer are searching Yahoo/Google/Just Ask Jeeves and all those informational sites.

However, I sincerely believe those who ask questions on Yahoo Answers are searching for an interesting way to make personal connections to other individuals of like minds or personalities. Same for those who answer the questions.

Yahoo Messenger used to be along the same lines in that a person would post a statement or question to initiate chat conversations with others. Then Messenger became so full of robots advertising porn sites that it was unusual to find a real person to converse with. Conversations there tend to be sexually centered and can leave a person feeling degraded and empty.

Yahoo answers is for fun and to seek out new creative ideas that are outside the box. Jump in and enjoy it with the rest of us.

I think it's the social aspect of interacting with different users and getting a quick, direct answer. After all, what's better than getting information from a human being who knows what they're talking about?

Also, some questions (the leftover 10%) can't be Googled. For instance, surveying opinions, getting personal advice, starting philosophical discussions about hot button issues like religion or politics or just goofing around to see how people respond.

But yes, a lot of questions are Googlable (is that a word?) and there are probably a lot of people Googling their answers to people's questions. So, essentially, you can get others to do all the legwork for you, probably because they're so much better and more efficient at parsing the information and wrapping it in a neat little package.

Google and Yahoo! are pretty much the same since Yahoo! hired Google to redesign their search site recently.

Wikipedia is great, but subject to errors since anyone can modify the information they have.

However, some people like different appearances of web sites like Dogpile with the cool dog bark sound that differ from Yahoo! and Google. Others like different formats.

Perhaps they like the feeling of interaction it gives them.

Perhaps the magnitude of information served up by a GOOG search confuses some.

Perhaps they feel they can trust the direct response they will receive.

Perhaps they like spending 5 points.

Perhaps it gives us the chance of an easy 10 points.

Got to say I like the 10 points.

Lack of motivation to search? The ease of someone else telling you the answer?

Users reading this may answer your question:
"Ok, I'm on google.com, where do I go now?"

It's just the way it is, and what makes this community fun.

Ever heard of lazy? Sloth's half-brother. And sloth is a deadly sin. I don't even need Google to know that.
