Irish people seem to think that their history is tragic, sure it has had war, starvation, poverty and disease but so has every other country. English history has had all of those things; (war, rape, plague, starvation, invasion, disease and slavery (even at the hands of the irish) Ukraine lost 41 million in famine, China had 20 million killed by the Japanese, Russia lost millions in WW2. Every country has had a tragic history but they don't see themselves as victims of another race. Why are Irish people different?

unfortunately, kelvin isn't responding to my 'narrow view of history' which is just as narrow as his first sentence. I merely gave a 'narrow' example like him. I really wish people would learn how to read and answer properly.

The first statement is true-'the normans invaded ireland'-wow so awful, over three hundred years the vikings invaded, raped, murdered, sacrificed, enslaved and massacred our people more extensively than ireland or scotland as they actually ruled half our nation. 'a fair target' that's nice-so drown the kids in the river. You have yet to answer my question- when will you 'beastie'? i knew this would happen. I assume that you can't. Keep on picking on at your terrible and awful history though.

You need to inform youself
The British role in Ireland was seldom in the interest of the native Irish who were without question trodden under foot and post Reformation etc for the majority Catholic population.
it's a sweeping stereotype to say the Irish only hold one attitude, modern Ireland is a very self questioning place In my experience - much more than Britain.
I agree that nationalist and Republican sections of the 'unfinished revolution' school are most likely to see Irish History the way you describe it- but that is definitely not the establishment position.
BTW Philip H. what about the 100s of thousand of people in what the UK calls 'Northern Ireland' who don't see themselves as British - mainly because they're not -either British or in Britain -the problem with Unionists like yourself like to act as if they don't -or even shouldn't-exist (something like the Zionists' attitude towards Palestinians) !
EDIT :LOL so who exactly are you accusing of having a narrow view of history?( and the Brits say 'yanks' don't get Irony! )

Ireland and Scotland were never divided by a wall built by the Romans. There is no such thing and it is also impossible. The Romans built a huge wall to keep the Scottish tribes out of the Roman's land (where modern England now is). You need to do more research on this. Look at Hadrian's Wall in my link below for all history. What do you mean by "Irish (English) cultures" exactly? Some Irish may speak a type of English language dialect but they are not English people. The Irish also speak a Celtic language called Irish. The Irish are regarded as Celtic people and not English (Anglo) people. Read about Celtic people in my link below. Ireland = Celtic Scotland = Celtic Wales = Celtic Galicia (Spain) = Celtic England = Anglo-Saxon

Don't wish to quibble, but much of Ireland's difficulties were inflicted by the English, or at the very least the Normans who took England over.
Those British people in Ulster killed by the Irish historically were Protestant settlers moved onto plantations taken forcibly from the original owners, so frankly I'd say they were fair targets. China doesn't have much of a soft spot for Japan, and Russians aren't exactly keen on Germans. How do you know those races don't see themselves as victims of the others? Oh, and in what way could the Ukraine see themselves as victims of another nation when they lost millions in a natural event?
What's your problem with it, or are you just having a random rant? Because it looks a lot like the latter.
And by the way, Robert C, Scottish or not I couldn't care less, but it's not a Celtic trait to blame the English. Perhaps if the English of history hadn't been quite so good at throwing their weight around their wouldn't be so much dislike of them? Dislike is not entirely unjustified, but I'm under no illusions about who's done more damage to Scotland over the years. Greedy bloody Scots selling the rest of us out.
Good to know you're watching, and you picked up on the one wrong fact without answering the rest....

we don't hate the english we dislike the way some think the idea of empire building and been tyrants to a nation for eight hundred years was their right. not helped either when the famine happened the english reaction was not as it should be for a part of there own kingdom. for seven hundred years. rather bad when you see an native american tribe done more to help the starving than the government that was supposed to look after its population. think of that a government that got tax from ireland didn't even send half as much aid as a small group in America that were almost wiped out by genocide.

The irish were the one great blot on England's imperial past. They were treated abominably and it is of no surprise that a degree of hatred still persists. Read about Ireland 1845 - 1849

Every country has its historical grievances, but like all countries that seem to hate the English thousands came to live here. Go figure.
Tangerine what about the majority population of Northern Ireland that are and want to remain British.
Kelvenis - Thats a sweeping generalisation I never mentioned anything about Northern Ire-lands Republican population not existing. Anyway whether your Unionist or Republican that has nothing to do with what the guys asking ?

When you say that the "English invaded you and took your freedom away" who are "The English"?
Fred Bloggs down the road?
Because he never went anywhere near Ireland! Yet it was him and his family who were put at risk of the IRA bombing compaigns!
