There are plenty of privacy laws to protect you from such a thing. Asking for a thumb print is a little excessive, I agree. However, each bank is different and for some, thumb prints are standard. It's just another way to verify your identity.
But do not worry, you thumb print will most likely never be looked at again by the bank. They have so many thumb prints, so they don't really care about yours. It's just the procedure.

So I moved from the USA to the Peoples Republic of China.
To open a bank account, I showed them my passport.
To get money from the bank, I use my ATM card
Funny, no camera staring at me while I get my fast withdrawal
Funny, I see security camera's in the bank, but nowhere else.
Funny how I can walk into any government building and the security guard pays me no mind, he's more concerned with watching his TV show.
Funny how I never see any police wearing black jump suites carrying automatic rifles and being towed along by a drug and bomb sniffing dog.
Damn!! And I heard that the police, military and the government is at war with the people.
I better watch out for that.
Problem is, everywhere I look, I can't find all that crap that I've been spoon fed prior to coming here.
Sad, isn't it.
Peace
Jim

That's absurd. You should not have let them take your finger print. You should have set them straight, not yell but tell them what you are going to do and what you're not going to do. Ask to talk to the boss and they won't like that because they will be scared that they will loose there job. Also, make sure you are dressed very well. You will get a lot further.
Good LUck!

Why should they trust you to cash a check at a bank where you have no account? I have not heard of a bank placing fingerprints at crime scenes.

It's common practice for banks to require thumb print IDs for non customers when cashing checks. I agree that they shouldn't. But it's also to protect their own butts from identify theft and false-identity theft.

Yeah, go to your own bank. If you don't have one, get one!
I'm in Texas and you can't get a driver's license without the DMV taking a scan of your thumbprints...1984!!!!!!!!!!!
