Your monitor is probably not compatible with that resoultion. It has nothing to do with the graphics card. The monitor must be designed to view that resolution.... i.e. VGA, SVGA, etc. The older monitiors especially (a lot of non flat screens) will not view that resloution

Sounds like the monitor is not compatiable with the 1024 resolution. Many older monitors are not. 800x600 is the best they can do.
Sometimes you can get a 1024 to display on an older monitor is you adjust the refresh rate. But as it varies by monitor, you will have to play around with the rates to see if one will work.

Some of the monitors can't support the resolution size because of the size it was built at. I suggest you install the drivers for the monitor. See if that helps.
