I have problem neighbors and without getting into it (YA has a lot of former questions about neighbors), I'm curious. They seem to try to deliberately antagonize me. Even when all else seems fine and quiet. Can someone who's taken Psych 101 please tell me why people do this? Isn't this a case of needing to "get a life"??

Thanks.

It's difficult to answer this question without more details.

However, one of the principles of behavior is that people behave because it is reinforced or has been reinforced in the past. Therefore, if they are trying to antagonize you, it is most likely because your reactions in regards to their actions pleases them. It could also be that their behaviors are naturally reinforcing to them, and the very act of doing the behavior is enough for them to keep doing it.

There are multiple possibilities, but this is the best I can do with the information I have.

Misery loves company so they are probably miserable and want to make you as well. I am not sure what they are doing to antagonize you, but I majored in Psychology in College and still can not figure out my neighbors. Yes, I have dogs but they are inside every night by 8pm. One Friday I was late coming home from work and when I got home just after 8:30, there was a note from the police on my door. They called the police for a dog that barks occasionally at 8pm on a Friday night. We have a quiet ordinance in our neighborhood but it doesn't start until 10:30pm!!! I tried telling them that my sister, who lives across the street would let my dogs in if they were ever a problem, but they chose to get the laws involved instead. My boyfriend works nights and had been parking in the street so he didn't block the garage for me. They complained to the HOA and got his car towed. Now, they park in the exact same spot he was parking in. We have never been anything but friendly to them, but now I give up, there is just no pleasing some people.

I have complete opposites as neighbors- One is a neat freak who owns every "Power tool" noise making, cleaning type machine known to man, & uses them at all hours-DAILY- (wouldn't want a stray wayward leaf to land & stay in his yard). The other collects junk of any & all different types & has had zoning called on him many times. He does a roofing job on his house this past summer & his roofing scraps are still in the front yard! We are so stuck in the middle in so many senses of the word. Trust me I agree, why don't they get a life!

Basically yes. They do need to get a life. And learn that yours is none of your business. And the best thing you could probably do is tell them that face to face and that you do not respect their intrusion into your life.

Look at why they are targeting you. People just don't pick on someone unless they " stick out". Dogs? Noisey kids? Anything you do to upset them? If not, then , if they weren't picking on you, they would be picking on someone else. Ignore them.

Hi! Your neighbours appear to be desperate for attention, even negative attention, like needy children. LOL. They seem to be saying "Look at me!"
