They were trapped in the past. The best times were when amphetamines were popular.
'Do you remember French blues?' she whispered
'Sort of, my love. But you know what they say about the 60s.'
'No, Tim, I can't remember. Be a dear, and mix me a snowball.'
He wandered over to the cocktail cabinet, relic of a by-gone era.
He handed Jayne her cocktail and, brushing her caftan aside, sat down beside her.
'We thought we could change the world. What happened?' he asked.
'Oh, Tim. We were young and foolish and oh so innocent.'
'But what happened to us?'
Jayne sat up quickly, almost pouring her snowball over Tim's Saville Row suit. 'What happened? What happened? You took that bloody job in the city. That's what happened!'
'But the change was hardly noticeable,' he countered.
'For you maybe not, but I enjoyed going to the market late on Saturday and picking up the best food bargains for the rest of the week. I never wanted a Nanny, and I certainly didn't want a 4 X 4.'
He stroked her hair, still defiantly shoulder length but greying. 'Hush my dear. We've had good times together.'
'God, Tim, don't you see? I've hated those fun-filled company dinners. All those years, learning how to cook to impress your business associates, when all the time I just wanted to serve up the hottest Vindaloos, and believe me, I was tempted many times.'
'Jayne, I thought you were happy -'
'Happy! I dreamt of being another Twiggy, of turning their heads when walking down Carnaby Street. Look at me. Size 16. Three kids who couldn't give a toss about anything apart from their bank balances.'
'Jayne, our children are all very successful.'
'Success,' she almost spat, 'What happened to the fabulous 60s?'
Tim turned his back, gulped his whiskey.
'Darling, you know I love you' he took a deep breath and braced himself for the onslaught, 'Have you forgotten to replace your HRT patch again?'

I enjoyed POPULAR music much more in the late 50's and early 60's than any of the music that has come since. In that BYGONE ERA, Elvis, Roy Orbison, the Big Bopper, Frankie Valli and the Fourseason, and others of their ilk ruled the airways with their INNOCENT love songs and rockabilly tunes as rock and roll began to take hold. The fledgling war in Vietnam and other world events were HARDLY NOTICEABLE to most of us. It was a FUN FILLED time into which the world did not intrude.

It seemed the whole world changed during the 60's and never returned to the innocent time that preceded it. The Beatles, Rolling Stones, and other British bands usurped the airways and the simple fashions of the 50s gave way to TWIGGY, CARNABY STREET, and the mod look.

Though they are known as THE FABULOUS 60's, and rightly so, it does seem that since that era music, fashion, or any other aspect of our lives has been able to replicate the seeming innocence and uncompicated joy of 50s.

Perhaps it is due to the growth of the media which makes it impossible to ever escape the perils the world holds. Perhaps the 50s were just an abberation, a time in which the world rested and recuperated from WWII. Then again, maybe the 50s I recall are just in the imagination of an old man looking for some rest from the ever present world.

Whatever the reason it seem so nice, I like to "visit" that time in my mind whenever I need a little peace and quiet. You're all welcome to come with me if you want. Turning on my Roy Orbison now, will join you back in this time later.

It is now popular to use the internet to find answers to your questions. However, in a bygone era, a more innocent time we used to find answers for ourselves. The difference is hardly noticeable. Surely, though, our lives are more fun filled now we don't have to spend all that time finding things out. We must have more fun now than in the days of Twiggy and Carnaby Street - in other words, the fabulous 60's. Probably not.
